Peanut chikki / Kadala Mittai, a familiar brittle snack of Indian people is also called gajak in north India and barfi or Kadalaimittai in south India. Peanut chikki is not a snack for special occasions alone, but it is normally present in the daily life of Indians like tea time, chit chat, television watching after meal times, etc. It is one of the most sought-after snacks by Indians in their daily life. Peanut chikki is said to be originated during the 19th century in north India. chikki varieties made with dry fruits, sesame seeds, cashew, roasted gram, dried coconut, pista, puffed rice, saffron, till, moong dal, mango peels, dates, watermelon chikki are all available all over India, but Kovilapatti a town in Tamilnadu is the only place in India which rose to fame for its high standard nutty and crunchy Kovilpatti Kadalai Mittai.
Peanut chikki is made with broken peanuts, jaggery or cane sugar, or palm sugar. But mostly jaggary is used in the preparation. It is boiled in water along with a small amount of cardamom powder to get a thick golden syrup, then the broken peanuts are mixed and stirred until the syrup attains a solid state. A little later after keeping it off from the stove, it is cut into small bars. Square, rectangular, and ball-shaped Peanut chikkis are available both in hypermarkets as well as in small shops at the corner of the street.
